ALTRON HAS LONG RECOGNISED THE NEED TO ENTRENCH SUSTAINABLE, ETHICAL AND TRANSPARENT BUSINESS PRACTICES INTO THE WAY IT OPERATES.
OUR ONGOING BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY
Altron has long recognised the need to entrench sustainable, ethical and transparent business practices into the way it operates. Whilst our formal sustainable business strategy was only finalised during 2012, the essence of our business sustainability that it articulates has been central to the way in which we have conducted business for the past 50 years.
However the launch and roll-out of the sustainability strategy over the past four years marked an important milestone in our journey towards formally integrating sustainability in all aspects of our business. This was a journey that started in 2004 with the publication of our first dedicated sustainability report, and continued with the evolution of our sustainability approach and the publication of one of South Africa’s first integrated annual reports in 2010. Over that period we deepened our understanding of what it means to fully integrate sustainability into the fabric of the business.
Each year we have continued to develop and improve on the way in which we identify, refine and report on our material issues. Similarly we have worked to ensure that integrated thinking becomes entrenched in the way we conduct business so that there is a close inter-connectedness between the financial and non-financial aspects of our business. We believe that we have reached a point in our journey where our integrated reporting reflects the integrated thinking and management of the material issues in the company.
Whilst issues of sustainability have for years been central to the way in which Altron conducts its business, our formal journey to integrated sustainability began in the early 2000s when we published our first dedicated sustainability report. In the years that followed, we developed a formal process to identify the business’ strategic themes and material issues, refining these over time and reporting on them in each year’s annual report. In 2010 we published one of South Africa’s first integrated annual reports, aligning issues of sustainability with our core business.
This journey continues to unfold each year as we evolve and refine the process to distil the business’ most material issues and integrate these into our business strategy.
The timeline below provides a snapshot of how far we’ve come in our drive towards an integrated sustainability business approach. Although much has been achieved, we recognise that sustainable development is a journey, and we continue to build and improve on this strategy.
