Tabelo Ndaba, a visionary solutions architect from Port Elizabeth, founded Oh My Wifi with a singular mission: to bring affordable, reliable internet access to the communities most affected by the digital divide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people took advantage of the payment holidays offered by businesses without realising that any non-payment would negatively affect their credit rating. Unfortunately, when many South Africans applied for internet packages from leading telecommunications providers, their impacted credit rating failed to pass the automated credit vetting process. But as traditional telecommunications providers turned away customers, Tabelo saw a business opportunity: he’d circumvent traditional vetting processes to offer affordable internet solutions to those who needed them most.

The business challenge

The most significant obstacle Tabelo faced was ensuring consistent cash flow because, as he says, “people tend to always forget to pay the internet service provider but remember everything else.”

This meant that instead of focusing on business growth, Tabelo faced monthly uncertainty regarding how much money he would get from his customers.

The solution

DebiCheck was the answer to Tabelo’s cashflow uncertainty. DebiCheck is a debit order requiring the person paying to confirm it with their bank. It reduces the risk of incorrect or fraudulent debit orders, and for Tabelo, it provided something his company urgently needed: consistent, predictable cash flow.

All the DebiCheck orders for Oh My Wifi’s private clients were loaded and Tabelo was taught how to load new DebiCheck mandates quickly and safely in the online portal.

The impact

Tabelo now partners with MTN and Vodacom, leveraging their infrastructure to deliver low-cost internet packages accessible to individuals with damaged credit, ensuring that no one was left behind due to financial hardships.

Following the success of Oh My Wifi, Tabelo is opening a new business venture, and Jean is also closely involved in helping him set that up.

But Tabelo’s work extends beyond internet access; Tabelo has made it his mission to provide technology and connectivity that enables students to further their studies, workers to find jobs, and entire schools to continue educating children.

One of Tabelo’s most impactful initiatives is his active support and leadership at the Zanethemba Charity Foundation, a safe-care facility for abandoned or abused children.

By law, Zanethemba must have around-the-clock video surveillance to ensure the safety of the children in its care, which places a significant financial burden on already strained resources. Through Oh My Wifi, Tabelo provides Zanethemba with free Wi-Fi connectivity and surveillance hardware, using technology to support social upliftment and protect vulnerable children.

Tabelo’s goal is to grow Oh My Wifi across South Africa and create a legacy where connectivity is a right, not a privilege. He envisions a future where every community, no matter how remote or underserved, has the tools to thrive in the digital age.
